Saving a Galapagos Penguin Family - Gavin Phillips

Saving a Galapagos Penguin Family

You are invited to enjoy this wonderful short story about two boys who bravely work to rescue a family of Galapagos Penguins.

In 1982, El Nino killed 70 percent of the Galapagos penguin population putting them on the Endangered Species List. The penguins are dying out due to pollution, animals brought to the island by humans, natural predators, fishing, and lack of safe nesting areas. Gavin wrote this book to raise money to help in the conservation efforts to protect penguins and to educate people about the Galapagos Penguins. Profits from the sales of this book benefit the National Aviary.

The Little Blue Penguins of North Sydney Harbour Gavin Phillips

The Little Blue Penguins of North Sydney Harbour

Gavin teamed with park rangers and scientists in Australia to construct a story that celebrates the conservation efforts to save the Little Penguins of Manly Cove. Little blue penguins are very small and face many predators and dangers. Pollution, trash, pets, boat strikes and larger wildlife are a few of the things that are making these cute little creatures endangered in Manly. The story includes details of Lisa, a real scientist who lives in Australia and helps to protect the penguins by checking for injuries and watching the population and Paul, a student from a college in South Carolina who went to Australia to learn and help in the conversation efforts of these penguins.  Profits from the sale of this book benefit the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife in Sydney Australia.

King Penguins on the Falkland Islands

King Penguins on the Falkland Islands

Gavin’s third book focuses on the King penguins on the Falkland Islands.  He introduces Rex, who seeks out a mate, raises a chick, and faces grave danger in the ocean! Will Rex survive? Gavin had a wonderful mentor on this book, Kathryn Wozniak, the lead aquarist and Penguin keeper at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Gavin visited with Katy and the King Penguins at the zoo as the project began. At the time, the zoo had three King penguins. A few days after his visit, all the King Penguins were sent to Texas to breed.  The zoo helps in the conversation efforts of these penguins.  Profits from the sale of this book benefit the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.
