Digital Storytelling Skills Serving the Community: An Identity Theft Film by Ian Cavanaugh

aaaWhen Ian read the challenge of an Eagle Project, to apply what he has learned about  leadership, responsibility, managing projects, and the Scout Oath—“to help other people,” he began by asking the community what was needed.

When he mentioned to Mayor Poling of Economy Borough his comfort with digital technology, the mayor referred him to an officer who had recently returned from a law enforcement training course on identity theft. Officer O’Brien (recently promoted to Chief O’Brien), tasked Ian with organizing an information night on identity theft for the community. Knowing that not all community members could make it out to an evening event, Ian proposed to make a short information film for the police department’s new website.

While the film would be considered rough cut from those who professionally make videos, I applaud his efforts to begin to learn what is behind the production, filming, editing and directing a short film while serving others. Way to go Ian! You have demonstrated leadership, responsibility, managing projects, and the Scout Oath—“to help other people.”
